A report of smoke in a house on Garfield Avenue in the West Wyomissing section of Spring Township early Monday morning September 30 resulted in a full structure fire dispatch.

TSFR Engine 85 responded and arrived on location with a single-story home, with nothing showing from the front and sides. Captain 85 assumed command and was assigned to Fire Ops 1. E85's crewman entered the dwelling to investigate while Captain 85 checked the rear and noticed the odor of a backfired oil burner. The condition was confirmed shortly thereafter by the interior crewman to have been a malfunctioning oil burner in the basement. The crewman then shut down the furnace at the emergency shutoff.

With this report, Capt.85 reduced the assignment to E85 and E79, returning the balance of the companies. The operating crews ventilated the dwelling using powered fans until all CO readings were at zero. At this time the property was turned back over to the occupant and all units were placed available.
