A concerned neighbor and a fast response teamed up to extinguish a fire in a garage on Garfield Ave on Tuesday afternoon November 12. A report was made to to Berks 911 that smoke was seen coming from a neighbor's garage. This prompted the dispatch of a full structure fire assignment that included TSFRS Engine 85, Wyomissing Ladder 79, Western Berks FD Ladder 18 and Engine 18-1, Shillington Engine 36, Mohnton Engine 57, Mount Penn Station 1 for Rapid Intervention and Western Berks EMS Medic 6511.
Chief 85 arrived, reported smoke showing from a detached garage to the rear of the address and declared a working fire. E85 arrived and positioned on Ossington Ave. The crew stretched a 2" attack line to apply water to the fire which was located inside the garage along the west wall. L18 and L79 positioned behind E85 to perform truck work, while E36 was assigned to water supply. The fire was knocked down in short order and the assignment was reduced to E85, E36, L18 and L79. The crews opened the overhead door, performed overhaul and mechanical ventilation. Companies were then released as their tasks were completed and equipment secured.
The Township Fire Marshal arrived and took over the investigation of cause and origin.
