While we are honoring fallen service members this Memorial Day weekend, we paused on Saturday afternoon to honor a fallen comrade in the local fire service.
One year ago, Captain Derrick Nester of the Wyomissing Fire Department passed away at his home after completing his shift. Derrick was father, friend, coworker and fellow firefighter to many.
To honor him, a custom tribute wall hanging was constructed and erected over his gear rack at his station that contains his gear and picture. This was installed several weeks ago. However, the final touch was the dedication of a formal plaque on Saturday that will be installed in the center of the hanging, below the gear and between the corbels. In this manner, Derrick's presence will be forever in his spot, looking over his Department and his firefighting family.
Derrick's passing qualified as a Line of Duty Death. TSFRS was honored to participate in this ceremony and Chief Hackman delivered appropriate comments on behalf of the Department. |
