A reported fire involving two trailers adjacent to an occupied horse barn located on Mailr Route Road in southern Spring Twp. occurred on Saturday morning May 2. A structure fire assignment was immediately dispatched by Berks County Communications consisting of TSFRS Engine and Tanker 85, Wyomissing Ladder 79, Western Berks FD Ladder 18, Adamstown (Lanc Co) Engine 11, Reinholds (Lanc Co) Engine 18-1, Cumru Twp Engine 42, Reamstown (Lanc Co) Tanker 17, Denver (Lanc Co) 13 for RIT, and Western Berks EMS Medic 6512
As the units responded, further information from Communications indicated the caller reported something on fire, possibly a trailer on fire behind a barn, with smoke and flames visible. E85 observed a black smoke header while inbound, and Deputy 85 immediately requested three additional tankers due to the lack of hydrants in the area. Cumru Twp Tanker 42, Reinholds Tanker 18 and Brecknock Tanker 72 were summoned accordingly.
Deputy 85 arrived and assumed command on the main road due to access considerations. E11 was already on location and initiating fire attack. As access was clarified, E85, L79, and E42 proceeded to assist. Chief 79 was assigned to Operations who confirmed the fire to be a trailer to the rear of the barn which was being extinguished. Additional incoming units were ordered to stage on Mail Route Rd. due to site limitations with the L18 officer as Staging Manager. FM43 was also requested.
With the fire knocked down, all staged units were recalled except for TN85 which was directed to the fireground to support final overhaul and washdown. As this operation wound down, all units except TN85 returned. TN85 remained to support the investigation.
