| This past week, TSFRS hosted some very important guests at our fire station. We were visited by all the 2nd graders from the Green Valley and Shiloh Hills Elementary Schools in the Wilson School District. Each class was transported by school bus to the station, along with their teacher and other guests. The young folks from Green Valley visited us on Thursday September 24, and our Shiloh Hills friends arrived the next day on Friday. Between the two schools we met with approximately 160 2nd graders and their teachers. At the end of the visit, each child received a special, official TSFRS plastic mug and pencil.
This is part of our annual Fire Prevention imitative wherein every 2nd grade class from Wilson visits the station, one class at a time. When they arrive, they are divided into two sections to visit the two programs. That way we can focus on smaller groups and provide more personalized attention as they attend each program and then trade when they are finished. In the sessions, they to learn how to dial 911 on our 911 phone simulator where each student can dial 911 on a special phone and get to talk to an operator to practice calling for help in an emergency. The students also visit our Kids Safety House trailer where they learn about home fire safety up close and personal, with the grand finale of seeing how pretend smoke sets off a smoke detector, after which they stay low and go to evacuate.
Each visit lasts about an hour, after which the bus returns, drops off the next class and returns the initial group back to school. The programs start around 9AM and the end in the early afternoon depending on class sizes. Additional classes are scheduled for later in October.
